Pique Assiette Style 3D
The basic design awaits with a prepped 30x40cm pre-hung substrate coated with Laticrete Hydro Ban.
Create a mosaic mural featuring a vase of flowers and a Hydrangea Bloom. The mosaic vase is shaped from a white ceramic tile and students learn Sandy's unique method of creating mosaic speciality leaves!
Flower patterns are supplied as a guide but you are encouraged to use your own imagination.
Suitable for beginners & advanced mosaic makers!

Flying in?
No worries, we have everything ready for you, however, if you are flying out on the Sunday or Monday, please arrange to pay Dave to pack/post your mural home to you later in the week. The mosaic and samplers may not be dry cured enough up to travel after the class, unless by car.
Flower samplers will be shaped from slate, smalti, stained glass, bottle glass, ceramic tile and vitreous tile.
In this class, it's a great opportunity to learn the technique for shaping flowers 3D, using tinted thinsets, texuture and assemblage of the mosaic.
Once students have completed this workshop, they are ready to explore Op shops, second hand shops, garage sales, boot sales and markets (maybe their own cupboards) to source crockery for future projects.
This workshop is the learning curve! So relax, just book in and get ready to take your mosaic florals to new heights!
About:
Using a mix of tinted thinsets (cement-based adhesives) learn the art of pique assiette.
Shape crockery/china, ceramic & vitreous glass tiles, etc into free form and botanical floral blooms, Sandy style.
Mix other tesserae (mirror, slate, vitreous tiles, stained glass, shells and more) to create mosaic flower samplers. All tools provided. Your base is cement sheeting base (40 x 30 cm) with hanging hardware installed.
Each student will make a mosaic hydrangea mural and many mosaic floral flower samples to take home. Glue, grouts and patterns are included in the weekend workshop. Each student has a full set of mosaic tools and a comfortable workspace in an inspirational mosaic setting. Full info sent to students after booking in.
Be prepared to make mosaics as you have never seen them before! A chance to combine the over-the-top 3-D with traditional mosaic technique - contemporary mosaic art built on good foundations! You will never look back. Learn to mix china, glass tile, mirror,slate, tinset and more with amazing new techniques.
What will you make? A mosaic mural - Mosaic Hydrangea!
A 3-D mosaic picture, featuring a mosaic hydrangea bloom, mosaic flowers such as frangipani, orchid, hibiscus etc, hand formed leaves and a vase shaped from a white ceramic tile. Learn pattern transfer techniques, thinset rendering and special effects and how to assemble your 3D mosaic. Your base awaits, with hanging hardware installed and coated with Laticrete Hydro Ban.
After learning the basics of cutting china 3-D mosaic methods etc you will enjoy cutting china, wine bottles and weaving blings and boings into mosaic fibreglass mesh. Thinset is the glue of the day. This Workshop is extremely interesting, fun and takes you to another mosaic level! You can hang this mosaic indoor or outdoor.

Jane Denison shares her 3-D mosaic workshop experience! October 2011.
But there was one more surprise – I learnt how to make things easier in my studio. Sandy has been making mosaics for many years, and has amassed a lot of timesaving tips. I now have buckets of water in my studio to throw my thinset tools or wash my hands. Layers of newspaper are also placed underneath my mosaics to save wiping down tabletop benches. And old plastic milk cartons are my new mixing containers!
