Othilas Mural, installed at Othilas - Stones Corner, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.
A mosaic workshop was held in Brisbane. Eager participants worked hard and happily to create this lovely mural.
Their inspiration was the Othilas logo of three women and the houses, butterflies, and flowers.
The centrepiece of the mural is made from ceramic tile, mirror, china and has cement 3-d lips made from thinset. The girls were very quick to learn and the result is a beautiful mural. Sandy taught them the basics of mosaics and expanded into 3-d for the china flowers and more. The mosaic butterflies were made on fibreglass mosaic mesh and applied over the base of background sky from vitreous glass mosaic tile, 2cm x 2cm. The sky colours were blended into OzMosaics Grids (available in our online mosaic shop or studio store) and gave a good lesson on opus regulatum!
The girls had a great attitude and the grid houses are so cute, representing homes in the area, little cottages, and Queenslanders on stilts. Multi grouting was used; the faces are cream but the rest of the mosaic is grouted in black. Dave and Sandy installed the mural by screwing it to the wall on site. The substrate was a big sheet of cement sheeting. The mural was designed, fabricated and grouted/sealed at OzMosaics studio before installation.
