2013 September - 5 days of mosaics!
Mosaic Project: Cannon Hill Brisbane
14 Mosaic Circles - created by school students
- to be installed as a wall art featureThe school art teacher, Michelle Ashford attended a mosaic workshop at Studio OzMosaics in 2012 and later discussed this project with mosaic artist Sandy Robertson at OzMosaics Studio, Coorparoo, Brisbane, Queensland.
.
Sandy Robertson assisted with project management, met with the art teacher at Studio OzMosaics and discussed the installation requirements, size, materials, workshop set-up at the school and other important factors to ensure the project ran smoothly during the allocated time.
OzMosaics provided material estimates, and cut the circle bases out of light weight mosaic board. Dave Robertson, Studio & Store Manager at OzMosaics, installed the special hardware in the circle bases prior to the project.
Sandy loaned mosaic wheeled tools (available in OzMosaics Webshop). Mosaic glass tiles (2cm x 2cm) were shaped by the students, using OzMosaics cutting bags. All students had access to the school safety glasses when cutting and filing the glass tiles. OzMosaics supplied the colourful glass mosaic tiles, milli and foil-backed tiles, grout and thinset. The artroom at the school provided a comfortable, inspiring and safe workarea for the making of the mosaics.
Sandy attended the first day of the project (to assist with set up, health & safety, delivery of the mosaic tiles, tools) and to instruct on mosaic technique, safety rules, mixing of the cement based adhesive, and to work with the students.
Attending on the last day of the school mosaic project, Sandy worked with the students, teachers and helpers and grouted all completed mosaics, assisted by the students and teachers. It was a busy, fun mosaic time and the students enjoyed cutting tile and placing glass mosaic tile and white beads across the 14 murals.
The art teacher, teachers, parents and students are worked hard on the mosaic murals which were designed on artworks suggested by the school students. The students were so happy and connected with the project and were excited! The artroom was always buzzing with mosaics.
Last stage of this project is gouting the remaining 2 large mosaic mural circles, polishing, sealing and installation on the school wall by the school teachers and helpers during the school holidays. A large wooden cross features in the mural and painted sections are to be included with the mosaics, as a beautiful backdrop.
Thank you to everyone at St Oliver Plunkett Catholic Primary School for making OzMosaics so welcome! The hot cups of tea, cake and such friendly welcomes by the students and staff made it such a pleasure to attend this project. I look forward to viewing the final installation! Congratulations.

St Ollie’s Artscape Project .....
We had a great start to the mural creations last week with some very excited children eagerly contributing their individual and personal touch towards creating the masterpiece!
Ideas for the Artscape Project began last year with a wonderful team of St Ollie’s staff working alongside our very talented art teacher Michelle Ashford.
We are very excited about what promises to be a wonderful feature that is part of our school.
