Sunflowers are mum'sfavourite bloom - also much loved by Nana White (my grandmother).
Mum is also known as Mosaicking Mum.
Shirley has been making mosaics since I started to mosaic about 12 years ago. She loves mosaic but is particularly fond of working with tesserae, shaped from china, porcelain, vitreous glass tile and ceramic. Of course, found objects such as vases, birds, flowers, butterflies, weird and wonderful items from Op shops are always finding their way into mum's mosaics.
My mother is shy when it comes to her mosaics but everyone loves her work. Mum brings passion and something special to her mosaics - love. Mum loves giving her mosaics to her family and gets more pleasure out of making and giving her mosaics than anyone else I know.Every flower she shapes, every butterfly she makes, every "little person" that emerges from her Leponitts is special.
This photo shows the raw work in progress - thinset, approx placing of greeney and imagination stirring the creative juices!
This photo shows the huge magnum wine bottle I prepped Sandy Style and then broke to cut and shape some greenery/foliage for the mural.
Mum hasn't had the greatest of years in 2012 - with two major surgeries falling out of the sky and landing in her lap, but she has been courageous and brave. The family have seen her through the battle and she is now recovering but finding it a little slow going getting her energy back.
The sunflowers in this mosaic are a tribute to Mum's mosaic madness! She never stops making mosaics and putting them under the bed, in boxes, she manages to make them in her unit and always wants us to come and she what she has made. We just love her and her mosaics.
So, because she has made so many little sunflowers over the last year, I decided to put them (I couldn't fit them all, but the remaining sunflowers are going in a special mosaic with her incredible collection of "little people" in the next mosaic) in a large mosaic Sunflower mosaic named "Shirley's Sunflowers by Sandy".
Here is the work in progress today, before cutting back the thinset and cleaning up...tinting...and adding special effects later on.
Sunflowers with a duck!
More photos coming soon of completed mosaic.
We all wish Mum a speedy recovery to get her energy back and a wonderful mosaic filled 2013!!!!
